Newhall Square

Client

Newhall Square, a dense piece of Birmingham’s urban grain; centred on the Whitmore Arm, a former canal in the historic Jewellery Quarter.
Formed in 2016 with the completion of the modern mid-rise residential block to the East side of the square. The water feature within the shallow pools to the south of the square were no longer in use, and needed a sense of purpose.
A part of the successful bid team for the Birmingham Light Festival, Rawls collaboratively delivered the concept design for an art installation within the pools of New Hall Square, unveiled in early 2025. Our design team worked closely with the creative team locally to develop initial inspiration to concept design stage and provide planning drawings.

We addressed the square's lack of focus and issues of antisocial behaviour, giving a sense of place.
